Introduction

Welcome to the first issue of Neighbor to Neighbor, a newsletter with relevant tips and information for members of Nation of Neighbors - or anyone involved with a Neighborhood Watch program.

We're planning on publishing Neighbor to Neighbor monthly and plan to include crime prevention tips, local crime trends, articles on improving and building your watch program and local success stories. In this first issue we'll discuss car break-ins, bring you up to speed on changes we've made over the past month and provide a few tips to help you get the most out of Nation of Neighbors.

Happy Reading!

Crime prevention tips

Avoid Crimes of Opportunity

That great GPS system on the dash that you waited all year to buy; the new iPod or Nintendo DS in the back seat; that latest model Blackberry in the center console — all have one thing in common. For those with larceny in their heart, these neat gadgets scream “Take me! I’m free and just sitting here unguarded. You can trade me easily for drugs or cash.”

Yes, it’s a pain to gather and remove all those attractive items each time you park in a remote or darkened area - and an even bigger pain after pulling in the driveway after a hot and tiring drive home in traffic from a tough day at work. But will you want your expensive gadgets tomorrow? Or would filling out a police report be more satisfying?

Suggestion: Keep a cloth grocery bag or a small gym bag in the vehicle to be able to quickly gather attractive items and store them in the trunk when parking in a vulnerable area. Lock your vehicle — always. After arriving home, take the bag inside with you. Even if you park next to your home or in your garage, always remove the keys and lock your vehicle. Make it harder for the crooks to earn their “easy money!”

  • API (Application Programing Interface) - integrate recent local activity into your community website.
  • Promotional Tools - Prebuilt banners and code for your community website plus downloadable fliers.

I know you hear it all the time, but we really do want your feedback. We're out to revolutionize the way community members and community members and law enforcement work together to build safer communities. We can't do it without your help. Please let us know what you like, what you don't and how we can better help you work with your neighbors to keep your community safe.
